Guest Post by Desiree Mondesir
As we stand on
the threshold of Election Day 2012, votes have already been streaming in
early. Some citizens are refusing to
vote for lack of godly choices and as always, opinions are flying
everywhere. “Don’t re-elect Obama, he’s
a Muslim!” “Don’t vote for Romney, he’s
a Mormon!” “Don’t vote at all! They’re both heathens!” While there may be some truth to these
statements, the bottom line is that is our nation and very way of life is at
stake.
Voting Righteousness
This guest
blog is not about telling you who to vote for, it’s about telling you how to
vote: righteously. What does the Word
say about righteousness and government?
Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people. (Proverbs 14:34)
That’s pretty
straightforward. Solomon didn’t mince
words. (My kinda guy!) And really, this is what our voting boils
down to: it’s about righteousness and giving it a place in our government
again.
Although we
were by no means perfect, our great nation was founded upon the Laws of God and
His righteousness. We were named “one
nation under God” by our Founding Fathers.
That was the original intent of our nation. If you are familiar with Dr. Myles Munroe,
you know that he always says “when you don’t know the purpose of a thing, abuse
is inevitable.” It is the same with the
U.S. Our purpose is to be righteous—in right
standing with God’s laws. Yet exalting
righteousness doesn’t stop at presidential elections—it has to be a part of our
everyday lives.
Seeking Righteousness
Exalting
righteousness is an ongoing process.
There are other elections to concern yourself with: Congress, House of
Representatives, Governor, Mayor, school board administrators, and more! Whether professional lobbyist or PTA member,
your stance counts! Involve
yourself. Become aware. Gain understanding. Get wisdom: it’s the principle thing
(Proverbs 4:7). This will enable you to
understand what is righteous and what needs to be righteous in the world you
live in.
Did you know
that seeking righteousness is actually built into our responsibility as
Christians?
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these
things shall be added to you. (Matthew 6:33)
Now this is
just verses after the Lord teaches us how to pray in Matthew 6:5-7; 8-13 so we
can safely infer that our Christian obligation is to not only pray “Thy Kingdom
come, Thy will be done…” but to also make sure that what we are seeking in
prayer and displaying in our actions is the righteousness of God in our life
and world.
Seeking
righteousness means ministering God’s love and Word to that young unwed mother
who is debating aborting her unborn child.
It’s donating that uncomfortable amount of discretionary funds to that
ministry or charity. It’s standing up
for the widows, the orphans, and others who are without protection and
provision. Prayer is an essential part
of this because that could very well be the time the Lord is instructing your
day, telling you what needs to be done, how it needs to be done, and who it
needs to be done for.
God may even
begin to burden you with the holy weight of a particular ministry or
project. Writing my eBook Godly Government is just such a burden
for me. It will help spread the word
about God’s desire for our government and nation. For you it may be a burden to abolish
abortion. Maybe God has gifted you with
the idea of a godly outlet for free women’s healthcare. These are all righteous causes and God
delights and giving His children creative formulas, models, and plans to allow
His Kingdom to manifest in the earth.
If we the
people of the Living God would join together, repent and pray according to II
Chronicles 7:14, and seek the righteous reformation of our nation and
governments, we would undoubtedly see a blessed change! Those who built the Tower of Babel spoke one
language and had one mind (Genesis 11:1-9).
In Nehemiah, the people had a unified “mind to work” (Nehemiah
4:6). And later on the Day of Pentecost,
we see the people of God, again, on one accord.
Just think what God could do with the American nation if the American
Church was on one accord? Let us pray
that God will not only give us righteous strategies for the reformation of this
nation, but also unified hearts and minds to seek for His will and His righteousness
exalted in our nation. Nothing will be
impossible to those who believe (Matthew 17:20)!
